Your brand name is your most important asset. It may have a specific capitalization (yourBrand, YourBRAND, YourBrand, yourbrand, YOURBRAND) or a symbol that must always appear next to it (yourBrand™). Whichever the case, it should be consistently written in all your assets: website, app, product pages, support pages, flyers, marketing emails, etc. And that also covers all your translations.
Brand name localization
Misspelling brand names, specially when they are long or have tricky capitalizations or combinations of letters, is most common than you may think. And it does not make you look good: It shows lack of attention, care or even a good QA.
This is especially important when you are translating your texts to other languages, as you brand name may not be as easy to type for a foreigner. And this is why preventive steps and a good QA are imperative:
- Brand names are the first thing I include in my Xbench checklists. This way I make sure it is always correctly written in my translations, even if it has been misspelled by mistake in the source (in that case, you will receive a message from me letting you know so that you can fix it).
- If I have to write the same brand name more than a couple of times, I will create an AutoHotkey hotstring. Because writing “yybb” is so much easier than remembering the specific capitalization and use of symbols in “your-BRand”, for example. It´s as easy as:
:*:yybb::your-BRandThis way I am 100% sure that I am always writing it correctly. That peace of mind is priceless (for both you and me).
Consistency, consistency, consistency
By preventing misspellings in your brand name, you will show your users and clients that you care, that you pay attention. You will be offering them a consistent experience regardless of the channel (website, app, email) and that won’t go unnoticed. In fact, if you misspell your brand name in a very prominent place, that could hurt your brand a lot, more than you imagine.
