ABOUT ME
Who am I?
Hi! I am Paloma and I have been translating and localizing content from English and German into Galician and Spanish for the last 10 years.
I also like to play with macros (in Excel, in Word, in AutoHotkey…) and regular expressions (Xbench is my best friend ♥).
I have been in charge of the Training Committee of the Galician Association of Translation and Interpretation Professionals (AGPTI) since 2020, so, as you may guess, yes, I am a strong defender of continuous training. I have so much more to learn…
In my free time, I also like to play with yarn, cotton, linen, bamboo and other fibers. And needles, most of the time I have my needles very near. Knitting and crocheting help me disconnect and relax. And I also get to wear what I make! It’s a win-win hobby.
What do I do?
I solve problems. Even those you didn’t knew you had.
That wasn’t the answer you were expecting, huh? You were probably expecting something like “I translate your texts, conveying the source meaning in a fluent and natural way, with the most quality”. Well, yes, I also do that, but that’s the basics. I do so much more. Because translation is a much more complex task than just “conveying the source meaning in a natural way”.
I scrutinize your texts. I analyze everything, from the texts themselves to their format, the medium, the surrounding content and your website’s related pages to understand your brand, your products and your services as much as you do.
And while I do that, I may find inconsistencies and errors, so apart from localizing your content, I also help you refine your English content.
If your texts are already translated…
Are you getting the expected results? You may have spent a lot of money crafting your English texts so that they perfectly work in your market, but maybe your localized content is not performing as well.
Why? There can be a lot of reasons:
- Maybe your translations are not addressing the users in the correct way.
- Maybe your translations are not giving consistent instructions and the users are getting lost.
- Maybe your translations are not using the right terminology.
- Maybe your translations are not keeping in mind the particularities of your target audience.
- Maybe you didn’t localize all of your content and the user experience breaks when they reach an unlocalized text.
If you need your texts translated from scratch…
Perhaps you don’t know the Spanish (or Galician) market, but you want to enter it and you don’t know who to entrust with this complex task.
You need someone who can understand your brand, products and services in their original market, but who also has a full knowledge of your target market in order to translate and adapt all your texts so that you achieve the same results with your localized content.
And how can I help you achieve your desired results? Please, keep reading.
How do I do it?
Every project has its own particularities, but let me tell you about my general approach to translation:
- I perform the basics: reading the source texts to understand what I am translating and its context, checking any references, glossaries, style guides, etc., and translating the content.
- After leaving the translation at rest for some hours or even a day, I re-read all my translation and make lots of edits. This is my favorite step, because I can move away from the source text and focus on creating a text that does not sound as a translation. I reword complete sentences, change the word order, join and split sentences… I play with the words as much as they allow me to.
- Then I start with the quality assurance phase:
- First, I run the spellchecker and confirm that there aren’t any typos or grammar issues.
- And then, the magic begins with Xbench:
- I have custom checklists for Spanish and Galician with the most common issues that aren’t automatically detected by spellcheckers.
- I also create personalized checklists for every project I work in, including product names, “do not translate” names, slogans and claims, style and term preferences, glossaries, etc. This allows me to make sure that all your preferences and musts are satisfied.
Following these steps allows me to ensure that your source texts have been accurately, precisely and naturally localized for your target market and audience.
